Our industry is full of buzz words -
- SEO
- Link Building
- Meta Tags
- Inbound Marketing
- Etc., Etc., Etc.
And while all these “buzz” words are good, and stick in peoples minds, we find that once these get in a persons / businesses head, they tend to stick there and be focused on. For example, there are a lot of small businesses who think like this:
ObsessiveCompul siveLinkBuildingObsessive CompulsiveLinkBuildingLi nkBuildingObsessiveCo mpulsive!#*&%#!*^%!
And so on. The same was true for meta tags back in the early 2000′s. The same is true for “content marketing” and even more so for “inbound marketing” right now. The point is, though, that they don’t matter. Yep - you heard it right, and you heard it here. All that stuff DOES NOT MATTER!
Now, you may be asking yourself, “Kyle, what in your right mind makes you think—especially as someone who does SEO for other businesses—that this stuff doesn’t matter?!”, and you’re right for doing so. Let me explain.
Marketing was a good chunk of my degree, and as such SEO, Link Building, Inbound Marketing, etc., I see as just part of our larger marketing mix. There is not one single portion of them that should be solely focused on; they should all be reviewed, implemented, tested, refined, and dropped or improved depending on return.
It has, and still is, always about generating great content that attracts our customers / users and encourages them to act on the goals we’ve set for ourselves. Why do we set a budget for ourselves to spend on advertising on billboards annually? Why do we spend money on radio? Why do we spend money on link building? It’s all part of our marketing mix.
And the main point is not to focus on one item, but to diversify our efforts and get value from the many different facets that are available to us. It is to create something so attractive, that we do not need to “build links”. No, instead, it is about creating something that “attracts links”, that drives people to want to talk about us on social platforms, that establishes us as a brand and leader in our industry.
This is what Will Reynolds so amazingly described as #RCS at Mozcon 2012, and is something that we at Regal Creative believe in and fully support.
To watch the full video of Will Reynolds describing what #RCS (and to learn what #RCS really is) is to both people in our industry, and to a real live business go here: SEOmoz Mozcon 2012 Will Reynolds #RCS Video.
If you’re a business that believes in doing #RCS, and wants to work with an online marketing and Milwaukee SEO firm that practices #RCS, then get in touch with us, and let’s get the conversation moving.
Cheers!
